Buddy List not working
« on: April 13, 2006, 02:12:55 AM »
Hi,

I'm using the latest version (20060402), and it seems that the buddy list isn't working in this or previous versions.  I have buddies listed in my servers.ini file (in the "BuddyList=" line) for each server, but nothing ever appears.  Am I missing something in getting it to work?

Also, if I click "Edit Server" off the "ServerList" menu, nothing happens.

Cheers,
Graham

You do not add BuddyList items to your servers.ini file.
You need to open the User List/Buddy List window, and add your buddies there.
There is an icon for this on the toolbar, or go to Options Menu, and choose Buddy List.

Then when you connect to the server your buddy is on, if they are connected, they will get added to the
Buddy List Panel.

To edit an item in the Favorite Server List, you must have a server selected in the Favorite Server List first.

OK - I understand the server editing, and I've tried adding my "buddies" as you describe.  Its working now.

Thanks,

Graham

It does not work as advertised here with the version 7 beta build of May 1, 2006.  I did a fresh install of this, too.  My online buddy never shows in the Buddy List panel even when he is online and I have him listed in the Buddy List window for that particular server.

The Buddylist works perfectly fine in the Beta Build.
You need to make sure that you have the Network spelled properly, and that you have the proper nickname of your buddy.
You also need to make sure that the buddy has a check mark in it, in the Buddy List Editor.
Add yourself to the Buddy List, and see.

Hi Snerf,

I've done everything you've said ... including using my own nickname and it still does not show me or my other buddy in the buddy list panel when we are clearly online in the channel.  I have spelled the server name correctly, also.  I have spelled the nicknames correctly.  It's just a "no go" here.

FWIW, I did import my settings from IceChat 5 when installing IceChat 7 Beta.

Here's what shows in my BuddyList.ini file:

[BuddyList]
n1=Oreo:irc.opera.com:
n2=TreeGhost:irc.opera.com:

Hello.

irc.opera.com is not a "Network" , it is a server name.
You need to use the Network name, perhaps its "Opera" ?
If the server does not have a Network name, it wont work, unless you have the "exact" server name that you connect to, which you would see when you connect, and see in console what the server name is.

Thank you, Snerf.

It works great.   :-)

Sorry about the bother.  I guess I didn't know IRC server's had special network names attached to them.  I learned something new though I've been on IRC for around 2 years or more now.

Yes, the majority of IRC Servers/Networks have proper network names attached to them now, so IceChat uses those names to help makes things a lot simpler for the Multi-Server capabliities. And for the odd servers that don't have/use them, then you need to use the exact server names, which is a bother at times, because of changing DNS's.

I love the program, but I've noticed a bug with the buddy list (with the last beta release) :

when we put more than 6 persons for the same network
online ones appear to be online, and just after they appear to go offline
while they're still on, and it loop this way to the infinite (online/offline) until we untick
one of the name in this network in the buddy list.

I hope you could fix it Snerf, and thanks for your work :)

Ok, the problem has been fixed for the next release.
If you wish to get the fix quicker, come to the #IceChat support channel, and request a build.
