IceChat 5.5 crashing problems
« on: April 10, 2005, 06:45:19 AM »
I had never had a problem with IceChat until upgrading to 5.5.  Since upgrading to 5.5, IceChat keeps crashing on me with no error messages or anything.

It crashes randomly when I close a channel or query.  I haven't noticed it when I /part, but then I rarely /part, I usually click on the x to close out of a channel or query.

Do you by any chance have Visual Basic 6 or Visual Studio 6 installed on your machine?

No.  I do have the VB6 runtime, that is all.

You might have shed some light on it though.  I thought it was happening on both my home and work computer.  Let me double check that.  Based on your question, it should only be happening on my home PC, not my work PC.

At work I definitly only have the VB6 runtime modules.  At home though, I just recently installed Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 Enterprise Edition.  Which would be VB7 I believe.

I'll fullly test it out at work and get back to you in a day or two.

In the meantime, if it is being caused by having installed Visual Studio .NET, is there anything that can be done to work around the problem?

The Service Pack 6 (SP6) version of the runtimes cause this problem, not the SP5 version, which comes with IceChat.

Any idea which one you are running?

I'm assuming it's SP6.  When I look at the properties of vbscript.dll, my version is being reported as:

5.6.0.8820

Any idea where I can get the SP5 version?

I dont think you can downgrade back to SP5 w/o killing windows. You can thank Microsoft for that one. I suspect though, that it is the mswinsck.ocx file that is causing the crashes. Check what version you have of that file.

Yes, that is the culprit then, the SP6 version of that file.

If you know how to unregister an OCX, and re-register a replacement, let me know, and I can give you a message and I will upload the SP5 version of it, and let you replace that file.

Just some updates for you regarding this.

I have no problems at work, everything works great with IceChat.  I have not unregistered the OCX and downgrade the file - I'm not going to either.  I'll just live with the random crashes for now.  Hopefully version 7 won't have the same problem when it comes out.

The problem was definitly caused by my recent installation of Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003.  I do not have this installed at work yet, and IceChat works perfectly there.

I recently replaced my PC at home.  IceChat worked great for me on my new box, until I loaded Visual Studio .NET 2003.

Hmm, that is interesting, obviously some OCX/DLL is being replaced that is causing the problem then.  I will have to generate a list of dll/ocx's that IceChat uses, with version numbers, and see which ones are different on your system.

mscomctl.ocx (6.1.97.86) - I just recently updated this in Alpha 7, because of an MS KB Article on it
msscript.ocx (1.0.0.4615)
msvbvm60.dll (6.0.85.95)
mswinsck.ocx (6.0.89.88)
oleaut32.dll (2.40.4517.0)
olepro32.dll (5.0.4517.0)
riched20.dll (5.30.23.1215)
riched32.dll (5.1.2600.0)
richtx32.ocx (6.0.88.4)
asycfilt.dll (2.40.4517.0)
comcat.dll (4.71.1441.1)

Sorry about the delay.  My family has been keeping me busy.  Anyhow, all but one of my files (riched32.dll) was newer than the ones you have listed here.

mscomctl.ocx (6.1.97.82)
msscript.ocx (1.0.0.88.20)
msvbvm60.dll (6.0.96.90)
mswinsck.ocx (6.1.97.82)
oleaut32.dll (5.1.2600.2180)
olepro32.dll (5.1.2600.2180)
riched20.dll (5.30.23.1221)
riched32.dll (5.1.2600.0)
richtx32.ocx (6.1.97.82)
asycfilt.dll (5.1.2600.2180)
comcat.dll (5.0.2600.1)

I have a zip file containing all of the above files that you can download from here if it will help you.

Well, I am sure that is causing the incompatability problem. IceChat 5.50 works fine with the runtimes that is included with it. I simply do not have the time to make it work with every different version of a file, and to see which ones is/are causing the problems. All I know, is that it works with the ones included with the install.

I don’t have the above programs, and the circumstances involved are slightly different.  Basically IceChat crashes on me when I first start the program.  This happens for both this version and IceChat 7 Alpha.  I have noticed it only occurs when I am running my browser (mozilla) or running a P2P program(morpheus, soulseek), or pretty much anything else that connects me to the outside world other then my chat program (GAIM- no problems here).  I close mozilla out and then try and have no problems, I can then reopen mozilla,  so not a BIG problem.  Something to look at and fix none the less.  Any suggestions or fixes are also appreciated.
P.S.  This first occurred during my beginnings with IceChat not too long ago.  I had neither other (possible interfering) programs running, but instead a piece of possible (I think) spyware running.  I got rid of that little bastard.  May be important but I think it is just another effect, not the cause.  No, I don’t remember what the spyware was called, sorry.

You say it crashes on startup.
Is this during the program loadup, or when you are trying to connect to a server?

Check errors.txt in the Logs folder as well.

10/22/2005 8:00:41 PM:Module: clsServerHandler Function: ServerMode:0 Error Number:5 : Invalid procedure call or argument

That is what it says in both IceChat5 and 7Alpha

After some tinkering I can defiantly say it occurs during connection.  I shutdown the “offending” programs like P2P and browser and it allowed me to startup and connect to the IRC channel I wanted.  After disabling auto-connect.  I started up my SLSK and Morpheus and Mozilla individually and tried again.  Soulseek causes no problems, oddly enough my browser didn’t stop IceChat from connecting ether.  Morpheus was the only program that gave me a problem today, but that seems odd in that I had this problem before ever downloading Morpheus.  None-the-less, I could startup IceChat and when connecting is when I met with error.  No doubt about the confliction there.
