I love this program but now....
« on: September 28, 2004, 06:49:30 PM »
It was working fine but now

when I load it, the splash screen comes on, then it crashes.
The icon stays in the tool bar flashing, and when I click on

it part of the title bar comes up, then the whole thing unloads.

What's going on?

Help?

Delete the file called "channel.ini" in the IceChat5 folder,

and then re-start IceChat, and see what happens.

If it still crashes, delete the file called "startup.txt" in the

IceChat5 Folder.
Then open the icechat.ini file, and look for line under [Main] that reads:

StartupLog=1
It

could also be StartupLog=0.
Change it to StartupLog=0 , if it is 1, and save the file.

Re-start icechat, let it

crash, and then open the startup.txt file.

Please paste in here the LAST line in the startup.txt file, that will help

to solve your problem.

Thanks.

I did your first suggestion and it's working

again.  I still can't DCC people, but I'm still trying to figure that out.
(I'm on DSL, no router, Windows XP, IceChat

v5.2, no firewall.)

I actually had that exact same issue as well with icechat

crashing in the same way. I looked at this post and did the suggested fix and it works, but now I'm finding I have to do it

again only a month later. Any Thoughts/suggestions?

I'm just thinking, maybe it'd help determine the cause if

you go to this file inside your icechat directory

icechat5\logs\errors.txt

At the bottom, your most recent

errors, is there anything there to indicate teh problem?

Just delete the file again. It is just a bug with how the

nicklist/server list is saved, some times it screws up. A fix is in the works for 5.51.

I've done all this, and Icechat is

still crashing. I'd paste what's in the startup.txt file, but since I've deleted it, it no longer exists. After deleting

that startup file, it's crashed twice. Both times I've gone back to try and get that information from the startup file, but

it's never come back.

I understand a fix is in the works, so I'm ver much looking forward to it.

To make the startup file re-make itself, you need to edit the

Icechat.ini file.

I believe its under [Main Settings] and then StartupLog=1 .. change that to StartupLog=0 , and

restart icechat.

Also, delete the channels.ini file, and if you still have problems, check out the errors.txt file,

and paste the last few lines here.

Hi snerf! I finally had another crash like the ones before. You weren't available in Chat, so I'm posting them here for when you have time.

From the startup.txt file:
Code: [Select]
Getting Color Settings...
Checking Text Highlites...
Loading Global Settings...
Loading Identifiers...
Loading Aliases...
Loading Font Settings...
Checking for IceChat Update - Please wait...
Checking Skins...
Initial Setup...
View Settings...
Loading Popup Menus (Help)...
Loading Popup Menus (Command)...
Loading Emoticons...
Setting up Fonts...
Checking Initial Setup...
Secondary Setup...

I was going to also include what was in the errors.txt file, but for some reason it's not there anymore. Let me know if you need anymore information.

Does deleting the channel.ini file fix your problem?
From the looks of it, thats what is causing the problem. You may want to disable the "Save the Window Sizes/Positions on Exit" option in Program Settings under options, and see if it helps out at all.

Ok, sounds good.
Strange how your errors.txt file disappeared though.

ok, Icechat just crashed again. I unchecked the  "Save the Window Sizes/Positions on Exit" option in Program Settings. I checked the Icechat folder, and the channel.ini file isnt' there this time (I'm guessing that's fine cause of the change you had me make. There's still no errors.txt file.

Is there anything else you want me to look at for information about the crash for you?
