IceChat crashing -- Error message
« on: May 18, 2004, 11:36:44 AM »
Hi Snerf,

I've

upgraded to the newest version of IceChat (5.20) and since then, the application seems to be crashing more than

usual.

I get this error message:

Code: [Select]
#BAI on myserver.com: IceChat5.exe - Application

Error

The instruction at "0x00000030" referenced memory at "0x00000030". The memory could not be

"read".

Click on OK to terminate the program.

I'm not sure why this is

happening. I'm on Windows 2000, pretty stable station I must say.

The reason why I'm concerned is that I may have

users that upgraded their version and it would affect the stabililty of the station if it crashes.

Let me know if you

need more informations.

Thanks for the great work you're doing with this application.

Is this happening when you are closing a channel, or

disconnecting from a server, or closing the program entirely, perhaps?

This has happened to me also, Snerf. It occured when I closed

the program entirely; but when it happened, I had already switched into another application and did not pay close attention

to the dialog box since I had just exited IceChat and didn't particularly care if it crashed after I closed it. :P

Well, to be honest, that info box doesnt really help me in

much of a way, all I can do is see where abouts its quitting, and look over that code, which is what I am doing now.
It

just helps me more when or where its happening.

Hi Snerf,

Sorry about the delay... I've found out

that it's crashing more and more often. I noticed that when the client is opened, and I ATL-TAB between my application. It

seems to happen frequently at random intervals.

I'm on a Windows 2000 build 2195 station, and I normally have a

couple of application opened at the same time. Whenever I switch from an application to go back to my chat, it crashes with

the error I gave you above. So far, I seem to be the only one experiencing this problem but it's not installed on a lot of

station.

Would there be any reasons for such a problem? I've read in previous threads that you plan to work more on

version 6.0 (C#) and you won't have time to work on this version anymore. I believe this issue though is affecting the

stability of the software and this shouldn't be considered as a picky feature that isn't working properly. If I can provide

you more information for the testing, let me know.

PS: I am connected in 5 different channels... with channels of

about 60 people. I'm OP on these channels, and there isn't much talking. It's more people idling and joining/leaving. Hope

that helps. I used to use the version 5.20 (production version) but I've read a few threads and in one of them, you gave the

beta version 5.21, it was supposely better for the crashing. I believe it's crashing more often with this version. Hope this

helps you.

Just a follow up to this post.

I have noticed this

crashing problem when people have "Visual Basic 6" installed, with Service Pack 6.  There is an OCX Conflict between IceChat,

which causes these crashes. It is with mswinsck.ocx, the winsock control, which has a few problems in the sp6 version. If you

revert back to the SP5 version, these crashes pretty much disappear.
